VIVAnews - The International Finance Coorperation (IFC), World Bank subisidiary, disbursed fund amounting to US$20 million to set up a training center for 4,500 Indonesian coffee farmers.
The training center will be established together with ECOM Agroindustrial Corporation Ltd, whose head office in Switzerland. It is expected that the training center will help farmers improve the product quality to meet international coffee standard, boost coffee productivity, and increase farmers' income.
Indonesia becomes one out of five countries receiving aid totaling to US$55 million from IFC. The project will take place for next five years.
IFC Vice President for Business Advisory Services, Rachel Kyte, said that the collaboration between IFC and ECOM will affect development, which in turn will support a large number of small farmers. "The combination between investment and company consulting services at international level will result in good social and environmental practices," Kyte said during the interval of the signing of partnership agreement between IFC and ECOM Agroindustrial Corporation Ltd at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), Nov 19.
According to Kyte, the project that will involve thousands of coffee farmers in Indonesia will link farmers to a chain of commercial suppliers which will benefit coffee farmers.
70 groups of 4,500 coffee farmers in Medan, Aceh, Bandar Lampung and Bali will participate in the training program.
Director of PT Indo Cafco Indonesia, Harold Savarius Siahaan, said that support for the farmers includes improvement of coffee bean standards and business productivity as well as information of recommended prices for fertilizer. "There will be an indirect effect on around 30 thousands of non-ECOM farmers," he said.
Harold went on to say that the premium coffee is in unstable demand although coffee prices in the international market are fluctuating. He hoped that the project will succeed as it did in Mexico and Uganda.
