Compensation to be Completed in 3 Years

VIVAnews - Aburizal Bakrie has assured that the compensation for mudflow victims in Sidoarjo will be paid in three years. For the time being, Bakrie's family has started paying in installments between Rp 100 billion and Rp 150 billion per month (approx. US$9.1 to 13.7 million)

"Today, the installments that have to be paid per month are between Rp 100 billion and Rp 150 billion. The compensation is guaranteed to be completed in three years," said Aburizal during the interval of a discussion 'Government's Position in Sidoarjo Mudflow' which was held at the Sultan Hotel, Jakarta, Thursday, Dec 11.

According to Aburizal, the Bakrie family will cover all of the compensation while PT Lapindo Brantas contributes nothing. "Until today, Rp 4.5 trillion (approx. US$410 million, ed.) has been disbursed. It is larger than Lapindo's capital amounting to Rp 100 billion," he said.

Regarding lawsuit that was brought to court by the Indonesian Forum for Environment (WALHI) and Legal Aid (LBH), Aburizal stated that there is not yet any winning party. "It doesn't matter whether it is the government or the company," he said.
