VIVAnews - During the commemoration of Indonesian Women's Day on December 22, women are urged to vote in the 2009 Elections. Women should vote for candidates who focus on women's rights.
"We are hoping that more women will vote in the 2009 Elections," said Coordinator of Alliance for Women and Mothers' Care Nurwahidin on Monday, Dec 22, during a rally on Jalan Pejanggik, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.
The alliance demanded that the government concentrate on women's rights. Frequent acts of violence against women as well as pornography involving women show that the government has weak control over the society, especially women.
"Although the Law on Pornography has been legalized, the government must be firmer and stricter when it comes to women's issues," Nurwahidin said.
During the rally, they gave flowers to people, especially women, to show their gratitude toward fellow women.
More than a thousand flowers had been passed around since Sunday, Dec 21. The flowers were handed out to women organizations and individuals.
They also focused on mothers' weak control over their children which resulted in further degradation of children's morality.
In addition to organizing rallies, the Alliance also holds routine discussions involving women organizations to seek alternative solutions in dealing with women issues.
"We are hoping that in the future, women may rise and transform themselves so that they do not becoming victims of crimes and other acts of violence," Nurwahidin said.
