Air Force Joins in SAR Efforts at Majene

VIVAnews – The Indonesian Military (TNI) Hasanuddin Air Force Base, Makassar, is joining in search and rescue efforts for victims of the Teratai Prima ship, which sunk on Sunday, 11 January, in the waters of Majene, West Sulawesi.

Head of Information Division of the Hasanuddin Air Force Base, Major Mulyadi, told VIVAnews that the Base will use one Boeing airplane, AI 7301 series.

“Today the airplane has performed three search operations from the air. It takes about 2 hours for one flight,” said Mulyadi, Monday, Jan. 12

The search, continued Mulyadi, was done between 8.00am Indonesian Central Time, until 3pm. The plane flew at a height of only five to 10 thousand meters above sea level in order to carry out the search operation.

“The search is being done by combing the coastal waters of Majene, West Sulawesi,” he added.

Until yesterday evening, the search and rescue efforts from the air have yet to bear fruit. According to Mulyadi, the search will continue this morning, Tuesday, Jan. 13.

The ferry Teratai Prima sank on Sunday, 11 January at about 4.00am local time around the waters of Baturoro, 50 kilometers off Majene waters. The passenger ship, carrying 250 people left from Pare-pare on Saturday with 17 crew members.

From information gathered by VIVAnews, 22 victims have been found in safe condition, the captain of the ship, 3 crew members and 18 passengers.
