VIVAnews – One of the premium fuel storage tanks at the Plumpang, North Jakarta, fuel depot caught fire on Sunday, 18 January. Traffic in the area is still being diverted.
The fire that started at the Pertamina fuel depot, Plumpang, on Sunday, 18 January at 9.15pm, which at one occasion blazed as high as 50 meters, is finally put out this morning at 6.00am.
“The situation is under control. We have put out the fire,” said Selamat, one of the fire department's officials, North Jakarta, to VIVAnews, on location.
However, officials are still taking precautions, isolating the area until there is no smoke and embers left. Several roads are still closed and traffic is being diverted.
The large premium fuel storage tank number 24 is still standing but the top portion has collapsed. Thick smoke can still be seen rising from the area.
Four fire engine units are still on location, putting out remaining embers.
Meanwhile, inhabitants of the area are starting to return to their homes. They had evacuated the area for fear that the fire would spread to their homes.
Up to this point, police officials have not announced the cause of the fire. However, the government will form a special investigation team.
According to Head of Downstream Oil and Gas Agency (BPH Migas), Tubagus Haryono, said that the team would consist of the Directorate General of Oil and Gas, Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, BPH Migas, and National Vital Objects Team
“We will coordinate first. The fire was only put out at 6.30 this morning,” said Haryono, Monday, Jan. 19.
According to Haryono, BPH Migas’s role in this team is to make sure that the Plumpang Depot can re-operate as soon as possible to prevent problems in distributing premium fuel
