Government to Place A Million Migrant Workers

VIVAnews - The government is targeting for one million Indonesian migrant workers to be settled in various destination countries.

"This is in line with the department's strategic plan," Director of Migrant Workers Placement at the Department of Manpower and Transmigration Abdul Malik Harahap told VIVAnews on Monday, Jan 19.

In fact, the placement in 2008 only reached 600,000, lower than 2007 with 696,746. Of the said figure in 2008, 7,179 were sent to North Korea through government-to-government (G-to-G) mechanism.

To meet the target of migrant workers placement, said Harahap, the government will focus on Middle East countries. "It has large potential, especially in the oil and gas sectors. The demand is really high," he said.

However, Harahap said that the government is still dealing with various obstacles in preparing the migrant workers. "The market is available. But the quality of the workers is poor, especially their language skills," he said.

With regard to a conflict involving the Department of Manpower and Transmigration (Depnakertrans) and the National Authority for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI), Harahap responded calmly. "There's no problem. We are only referring to Law No.39 article 5 section 2," said Harahap. The section states that the government (Depnakertrans) entrusts authority in agencies in provinces, regencies and municipalities.
