Indonesian Citizen Evacuated from Gaza

VIVAnews –Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt has evacuated Umi Saodah, an Indonesian migrant worker who has been stuck in Palestine since last August. Saodah has been brought to Cairo as of Thursday, Jan. 22.

According to the press release issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, Umi Saodah was ‘handed over’ by Abu Ja’far (Palestinian Reconciliation Committee) to Muhammad Abdullah of the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo at the Rafah border.

The evacuation process took a considerable amount of time. It started with communications between the Indonesian Embassy and the Palestinian Red Crescent. After the cease fire in Gaza, Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt sent an evacuation team to Rafah on Tuesday, Jan. 20.

The plan was for the team to enter the Gaza Strip, however Egypt did not give permission, citing security as its reason. It was only on Thursday, Jan. 22, that Saodah could be evacuated.

During the evacuation process, the Indonesian Embassy was assisted by Palestinian Red Crescent, Egyptian Red Crescent, security and judicial officials of Gaza, and MER-C Indonesia.
