Human Trafficking Syndicate Unveiled

VIVAnews - Human trafficking applying new modus operandi which took the forms of kidnapping and violent acts was unveiled in Entikong, West Kalimantan. A report from a victim named Susan was a significant clue for the Entikong Police Department.

"Police will look into the case further. On 10 September 2008, police captured Nurdin aka Boros," said Indonesian Police spokesperson Abubakar Nataprawira on Friday, Jan 23.

The case which involved Nurdin, member of human trafficking syndicate, has been submitted to Sanggo District Court, Central Kalimantan. According to Abubakar, Sanggo Police Department is followed the lead and on 3 December 2008, one more member of the syndicate, Kamseng, was arrested. He was apprehended in Supadio Airport, Pontianak, West Kalimantan, when he was trying to run away to Jakarta.

Today, said Abubakar, Kamseng's case is ready to be submitted to the court. The police is pursuing other suspects. "One of the suspects is Eka and a Malaysian called Helen," he said.

According to Abubakar, the suspects were charged with multiple articles. First, article 4 and article 6 of Law No. 21/2007 on Human Trafficking will be applied. "The minimum sentence is three years of imprisonment and the maximum is 15 years. The minimum fine is Rp 120 million and the maximum is Rp 600 million," said Abubakar.

The perpetrator was also charged with article 83 and article 88 of Law No. 23/2002 on Child Protection.

The syndicate abducted Susan and three other women. From Jakarta, they were taken aboard to Pontianak before they were sent to Kuching, Malaysia. In the neighboring country, they were forced of becoming prostitutes.
